After experiencing failure during the speed dating activity, I thought marine life in captivity would not be an easy topic. My concluding topic is diabetes. Unsure of the specifics, but I know I will be focusing my project on diabetes. An action plan will be more in reach because of the resources we have in the area.
Some Diabetes Facts:
I could possibly be interested in researching how to prevent diabetes at young ages. Too many children are being diagnosed with diabetes. After our speed dating activity the other day, I realized my topic idea would put me in a place to be unsuccessful. Even though I have a great interest in marine life, living in a landlocked state impedes my ability to help these animals. Hearing peoples opinions on my topic really pushed me towards deciding on a new topic. Diabetes came into mind when I was thinking about a new topic. My dad has diabetes so I thought it would be cool to use because I have a connection in my family.
While trying to give the best advice I could, I was often told it was great advice and very helpful to them. I had a lot of ideas for survey improvement and reaching out into the community. I also helped Renee break down her topic even more to get a broader perspective on the causes of stress. The feedback I received pushed me towards a new topic. However, I was able to receive some good advice from Stephen about contacting the Boston Aquarium to see how they keep their animals "happy." Mia also suggested getting in touch with both SeaWorld's to compare the habitats for their marine life and also the different cultures of visitors and their respect towards the animals. Smoking, drinking alcohol, or taking other illicit drugs during pregnancy is not suggested. When pregnant, every drug you choose to take, your baby takes in unwillingly. Combined data from 2008-2009, from the National Survey on Drug Use and Health, recorded drug abuse when pregnant from ages 15-44. The results showed the younger half of the people were involved in substance use. Taking in drugs keeps your baby from getting nourishment and raises the risk of stillbirth or premature birth.
In the ocean whales and dolphins live in large groups called pods which helps them maintain family bonds. The ocean is endless for these animals. They swim hundreds of miles every day. In captivity, dolphins and whales are limited to very small pods. In their tank, they are unable to swim free for miles. They can only take a few short strokes because of the limited space. Not being able to life in their natural environment can cause skin diseases and the collapse of the dorsal fin. Therefore, holding these animals captive is inhumane. My name is Maria and I am a 17 year old senior from Rutland High School. This blog is here for you to comment and help me create my STEM capstone project. My main area of interest for my project is marine life in captivity. Tell me what you think!
